McGowan Fine Art announces the opening of ‘Hikes and Travels,’ featuring the art of Catherine Tuttle. The show will run from October 11 through November 11, with an artist’s reception on October 14th, from 5 to 7 PM. This is free and open to the public.

‘Hikes and Travels’ encompasses Catherine’s travels of the last three years. It includes landscapes from Italy, Glacier National Park, Maine, and a return to her favorite subject matter, the White Mountains. Over time her themes are a constant, but she is excited about a deeper level of draftsmanship with this new body of work.  Concentration of color, technique, timing and patience combine in this latest show.

Catherine worked with an Impressionist palette to capture the pure colors of the early June and July mornings, her preferred season and time of day. ‘View from Dimond Hill’ features the lush greens of early summer and soft, hazy light brushing the tops of trees – built up with thin layers of oil to convey depth, volume and luminosity. It captures the stillness of a breezeless summer day. Her attention to the nuances of a season mean some paintings take up to three years to complete. If the painting is not completed before the season turns, she stores it until the following year before continuing to paint. The weather also requires the artist to be flexible about her painting schedule.

Catherine’s patience and obsession does not end with her fealty to nature. In ‘Mt. Lafayette with Reflection,’ Catherine invested in perfecting the details by calculating the proper proportions of the landscape, (clouds, tree etc.) to the reflections in the water. “The expectations of the work is higher and I have become more patient about going in and reworking things to reach those expectations,” she explains. She imbues each painting, whether in Glacier National Park or Italy, with the same high standard.
