BECKY DARLING
The works in this show are inspired by some of my favorite places – the landscapes and waterscapes of New Hampshire and coastal Maine. I am attracted to the “cool colors” found in these coastal scenes, lakes, and vistas. Even when I'm not painting, I find myself constantly observing and noting the colors in the world around me. I take my sketchbooks on site and in the canoe to make color sketches and notes. Working in these sketchbooks is probably one of my most favorite things to do and they serve as a treasure trove of memories, observations, and inspiration.
Over the past few years, I have been working toward developing more intense, richer color in my paintings to portray the variety of colors found in water and the natural landscape. As individuals, we each perceive color somewhat differently and have certain colors that seem to be a part of who we are and that we respond to in an emotional way. This response to color has always been part of what I try to capture on paper. Time of day and lighting also play an important part in my work. In my paintings, I try to give the viewer my interpretation of what it was like to be in that particular location so that when the work is viewed, especially the larger works, the viewer gets a strong feeling of being there or in a similar location.
Works in this show were inspired by the various seasons and moods of the New Hampshire landscape as well as by trips in the canoe on various lakes, such as Umbagog and many painting sessions on the coast of Maine – from Drakes Island to Acadia and Swans Island.
