LISA GREY
For the past two years I have been learning about traditional and experimental printmaking on both paper and fabric. I am a perfectionist who sometimes recognizes the futility of my nature, so I feel free to break the rules and invent new ones in the never-ending search for different and unique ways of expression. The work in this show combines the old, with emphasis on silk painting and dyeing techniques, dye sublimation, and gelatin prints.
My focus has always been color and texture. I am exploring new tools and methods for achieving both simple and complex decoration on cloth and paper. The challenge is then to be able to present it in ways which engage the viewer. I try to make my choices work on many levels so that each time it can be looked at with a fresh eye, discovering a hidden gem or finding a new interpretation or meaning in the work.
My imagery is derived from the world around me. This work is specifically about circles, from the many wheels of all shapes, sizes and colors I see in our scrap yard each day on the way up the stairs to my studio, to the pleasing and calming nature of their shape, to coming full circle in how I think about and work with color and fiber.
