LOTUS YUEH-JU LIEN
My creative process is used as a tool to explore and discover my conscious and subconscious understanding of myself in the context of the universe around me, including the societal structures that affect me. This requires examining the coherence of my personal experience in relation to my identity, community, and humanity as an interconnected part of nature and the universe. I attempt to convey this interconnectedness by creating tension between the familiar and the unknown, making connections with my viewers where he or she can find comfort in the familiar. Ambiguity exists where meaning is not fully resolved and requires the viewer to absorb and interpret the piece in the context of his or her own lived experience.
Through process, by removing all evidence of the artist's touch I attempt to make the work more universal. Through play and experimentation, I seek to express a perpetual tension between dualities of culture and nature, intimacy and isolation, and identity and assimilation. I am constantly reconciling these dichotomies as I inhabit the spaces between them. These spaces exist within another duality: that of the frenzied physicality of living in solidity and space, and simultaneously inhabiting the calmer, non-tangible, spiritual world.
