MARISA DIIORIO PETERS
RESUME
The reality of constant flux in nature and of the metamorphosis of living things are what motivate these images. Some of the themes I use relate to gestation, evolution, flowering, departure and decay. These paintings are built in many layers over time and for that reason I often work on several canvases at once. Forms are painted out and reborn in other areas. Drips and smudges are retained that they might evoke a sense of movement and transition.
I have been inspired and influenced by artists such as Terry Winters, Marsden Hartley and Martin Johnson Heade, as well as Botanical Illustration. Collecting specimens and drawing directly from nature continue to inform my work. I have long been engrossed with the materiality of oil paint, and my love of manipulating surface and color stems from an attachment to, what is for me, the highly seductive nature of the paint itself.
