Artist's Statement

My work is concerned with investigating primal and pre-verbal responses to human experience.  I draw inspiration from everyday experiences, spirituality and an interest in relationships.

An integral component of my working process is the making of marks. These are unmediated and immediate legacies that we leave behind each time we pick up a tool and drag it across a surface. Marks are one of the most basic forms of communication and can be organized to create an image, a symbol, a pictogram, a letter or simply maintain their integrity as marks. I am fascinated by the different qualities marks assume and exploit them for a variety of expressive purposes.

I enjoy layering my work: revising, editing and building a history of marks, shapes and color relationships as the object develops. I draw parallels between the richness that is created in the surface of a multi-layered painting and the depth of understanding that is created through rich and varied life experiences. I believe that a painting gives back to the viewer the same level of energy and care that went into its making.

The process of making the work is inseparable from the content. I usually begin with a general idea, which evolves during the act of painting. I have become aware of rhythms and patterns of working that occur in the development of a piece. These usually take the form of an ebb and flow of decisions toward complexity and back to reduction, with finished results that range from lyrical to more raw and visceral. Since the outcome is not preconceived, decisions of completion are intuitive and founded on a general sense of wholeness. The qualities of unity and wholeness that I strive for are based upon recognition, rather than preconception. In this sense, my process is not so much a case of imposing a willful intent upon the work as it is a willingness to engage in a dialogue, responding to nuance and clarity as the piece progresses. A piece is complete when all of its attributes combine to create an object that effectively resonates with me.
