Artist's Statement

“The Color of Seasons” represents my continued and most recent creative exploration of landscape and still life imagery. Always in pursuit of dynamic pictorial situations, in the last three years I’ve gone farther afield to capture the variety of color, texture and compositional manifestations found in wild and manicured landscapes. My recent subjects include favorite locations in Franconia, Derry and Hopkinton, New Hampshire; a summer visit to Appledore Isle, off of NH’s coast; and, a winter trip to colorful Sanibel Island, Florida. When it’s too cold to be outside with my paints I make a practice of creating large floral still life compositions that please my eye and heart. Yet, when weather permits, or I travel to faraway places for warmth and new light, I’m most happy to be outside engaged with the pleasures of plein air painting and the pictorial challenges of making dynamic, color punched images. I continue to work primarily in watercolor, and to enjoy the immediacy and the challenges that underlie this exacting medium. The paintings that constitute “The Color of Seasons” have a greater sense of luminosity, structure and a reliance on transparent layering, than the paintings of the recent past.
