Artist's Statement

Kat O’Connor earned a Bachelor of Arts in drawing with highest honors from Montana State University in 1990 and a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1995. She has exhibited her work nationwide, including three solo shows at regional museums, and won numerous awards. She is an Artist Member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston, Massachusetts. O’Connor has shared her love of art with students at Southwest Texas State University, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Worcester State University, Worcester Art Museum and DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park. She has lead landscape painting workshops in Maine, New Hampshire, Cape Cod, New Mexico, Italy, and Greece.

In the spring of 1995 I took a trip to Marfa, Texas with my husband and father-in-law. We hiked around Big Bend National Park and visited Donald Judd’s Chinati Foundation. While both interested me, swimming alone in the hotel pool at night would influence my work for years to come. That quiet pool of light in the desert has become the subject of numerous paintings.

The paintings are not portraits, but studies in which solitude is solace. Water and light become buffers, allowing the viewer to stand outside the subject, to watch from the protected darkness, the way we view film. We become voyeurs to these moments, when the subject is surrounded by water, encased in it, needing air and light. Until we have taken that first gulp of air upon surfacing, the outside world does not exist.

The figures shown are members of my family, the pools from locations in Massachusetts, Florida, New York and Greece. One of the paintings shows chairs thrown into a pool in preparation for hurricane Bonnie in Homestead, Florida. Another shows reflections in a pool of lily pads. I paint in oil, acrylic and watercolor, as each medium inspires me to handle an image in a different way.

It would have been impossible for me to resist exploring these situations in paint. The figures/objects are often removed from their original context so that I can explore what I saw in the image. That is often times very different than a photographable reality. These are paintings of how I experience the world.
