Artist's Statement

In search of my own cultural identity, I have found it helpful to look at the art of other cultures in order to establish an aesthetic foundation on which to create my own “mark.” For me, it is important to make the cumulative link between yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Lately, I have been “harvesting” glacial boulders off of my own property, or I get them from gravel pits in the area. The granite is transformed by cutting and shaping, yet I retain its natural essence. Computer generated designs assist me in this transformation by allowing to interject a contemporary feeling by etching the stone to create textural reliefs. I bring this approach of transformation of materials to my paintings. What is important for me in a painting is a relationship between the paint, and the different materials such as lead, wood, and slate. My interest is to create a tactile surface that interrelates with these unexpected materials in a balanced way. Computer designs are also employed in a similar manner as in the sculpture. The materials I chose and the designs created are reflections on past cultures that continue to live for me. I try to achieve a format to look at our technological lives today and how it connects with the natural world we live in. The process provides me a connection or link to the continuum between the past and present.
