Artist's Statement

Elaine Swenson

The series of work titled Inner Landscape are mixed media painting/collages combining acrylic paint, graphite, colored pencil, paper, linen and canvas on primed canvas. Collage affords me the opportunity to combine transparent, stained and thinly applied layers of paint  with more opaque, scumbled and sometimes heavily textured pieces.

My intention is to draw the viewer into an interior, quiet space that may or may not seem familiar. I often refer to the act of building these pieces. The implied lines and arched or rectilinear openings or doorways reference a structure which houses the interior space and acts as a counterpoint to the multiple, loosely executed and energetic paint applications and mark-making surrounding it.

“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
