Artist's Statement

Molly Wensberg

Painting came to me by way of weaving. As a tapestry weaver from 1982-1997, I feel I learned to ‘paint with wool’ and in 1998, I switched to painting full-time. I am primarily a landscape painter, working in oils. I am drawn to the landscape I see around me every day, by its influence on us and how we live, and our influence on it.  The honest simplicity of the New England landscape has been my inspiration since moving to New Hampshire in l998.  The farms and fields I see every day are so distinctly New England they typify the historical and traditional qualities that are an integral part of the region’s unique character.

The interplay between man and nature interests me; the give and take and subsequent emergence as one in the landscape. Though representational in style, my aim is to paint the emotion of a place rather than focusing on specific local information. I remind myself constantly of the expression, ‘less is more.’  What is left out of the painting is as important as what is put in.  It is the absence, ‘the space between the lines,’ that jogs the senses and invites emotional involvement between the viewer and the painting.

Recently I began working on interiors.  As with my landscapes, the interiors are more about the atmosphere and feeling of the room, rather than the physical rendering of the space.  The piano became a focus because, aside from the physical beauty of it, the connection to music is a great inspiration; it seems to charge the atmosphere around it.  My mother is a professional pianist and composer and my son has taken to it as well.  Music plays a large part in my painting and it seems only natural that the piano would be a perfect subject.  The scale and mass of a grand piano exudes the same qualities that a barn or building does in a landscape.  A grand piano is a very complex form and has been very challenging and quite thrilling to paint.

Cows….well, cows just make me smile.
