Artist's Statement

My current work represents an extension and distillation of my engagement with the figure that began in earnest in 1996.  Previous to that time my painting, drawing and print work was primarily abstract with iconographic images incorporated from my experiences working in the Provincelands National Seashore in Provincetown, MA and my Fulbright Fellowship to Nigeria.  During that time I was making outdoor site-specific sculpture and in conjunction, creating a large body of drawings and works on paper. In Nigeria I was studying traditional Yoruban carving.

I began to work with the figure in order to give voice to a different level of expression.  Drawing continues to be the key component to my investigation and exploration with the human form.  I began by drawing figures on the beaches in and around Provincetown.  As the years have progressed I have been extracting additional images from this environment – the water, sun, birds, and other elements of the landscape – and reconstituting them with the mark-making language of previous abstract work.  I am now combining this language with a variety of figurative, symbolic and abstract images including those derived from my African experience.

The work included in this exhibition has been completed over the past year with the exception of a few examples of earlier work that relate to the new paintings and prints.
