ROBERT SEIGELMAN

My recent prints, are much more minimal and spare as compared to earlier pieces. While my work has often been densely colored and richly textured, in these pieces I strive for a sense of breath, clarity and open space. As with earlier work a sense of touch and intimacy, regardless of size, is also important. These are unique prints, Monoprints. They are made using plates of white plastic (Komatex), which can be scratched and manipulated with a wide variety of power and hand tools. I work on the plates directly as drawings. I do not work from sketches or plans, but let the work flow from my hands and tools. I refer to this process as a way of thinking with my hands. The nest step after the plate work is to print them. After years of making woodcut prints and prints from metal and plexi glass plates, there has been something of a relief in working on a white plate. The color is more apparent and somewhat more sensual. These prints are generally printed intaglio, meaning the ink is pushed into the lines in the inking process, with the plate surface wiped nearly clean. For the most part they are not perfectly inked plates. I am very interested in accidents that may happen in the printing process, which may enrich a piece. In many ways the work is about the search and discoveries made in the process and through experimenting. The printed marks are like the opposite of a treasure map, they are evidence of process. The individual prints are byproducts of this process, and trophies of the search.
