SUSAN SMEREKA
"Things that have been in contact with each other continue to act on each other at
a distance after the physical contact has been severed".
— James Frazer's "Law of Contact"
One of my greatest concerns in creating art work is the audience's response.
The goal is for them to come away with something. I convey positive messages
which can act on a subconscious or a conscious level. Oils, oil monotype, mixed
media and installation are the media I work with. I choose media in which my
whole body can be active in the process of creation. My themes revolve around
paradoxes and how to resolve them in the process of making art. The most
palpable paradox I confront is my need to express both the emotive/random
gestures as well as precise symetrical lines. Their link is that they can both be
rendered intuitively. In my work I am always looking for such links and balances.
I am also concerned with threads of experiences (mine and those other have
shared with me) that show art evoking and invoking a certain amount of change
on various levels: I hope to evoke energy shifts (change) in my life and other's.
I would like to be part of the threshold that aims to accelerate the evolution
of the human spirit.
