JEAN K. STEPHENS
STILL LIFE
Through a series of drawings and paintings, I am exploring the concept of woman as vessel. I have chosen to use eggs as a symbol for their obvious connotation as a fertile vessel and for their incredibly beautiful, simple, organic form. Where nests are included, they are vessels in their own right providing safe havens.
LANDSCAPE
My oil landscape paintings speak passionately about my intimate relationship with Nature and the spirit of the land. My love of organic form has developed from the experiences of growing up in rural suburbia, scout camping, working on a farm and gardening.
I’m moved by the configuration of the land, the design set up by a treeline against distant hills or a path running through a tended field. Wherever possible, I create plein air studies, immersing myself in the sounds and smells of the chosen environment. I feel this allows my paintings to speak with integrity. My hope is that these paintings provide a place for you to lose yourself awhile, to stop, take a deep breath, and savor some of Nature’s peace.
